Music In My life

The Role of Music in The Other Wes Moore and My Own Life

Music plays a very important role in ‘The Other Wes Moore’, shaping the other Wes Moore's life. In his case, music is strongly rap-is an outlet of expression, being able to survive some difficulties of the environment. Given the neighborhood conditions, music meant finally expressing his emotions and interrelating with everything going on around him. The rap lyrics, particularly, fit his struggles nicely, providing him with a way to word his pain, his dreams, and the true essence of his existence. It also spoke to the culture within his community as a soundtrack to personal struggles and those of societal importance he had to deal with. For Wes, it wasn't about mere amusement; it was a form of survival, a way of finding one's voice and identifying with oneself.

For me, music also carries a parallel purpose, yet slightly different. Growing up Colombian, I was always surrounded by salsa, cumbia, and other traditional Colombian music. These rhythms and melodies are deeply emotional to me; they connect me with my cultural heritage and my family. When salsa or cumbia plays, I remember family gatherings, celebrations, and how music was always part of our lives. The upbeat rhythm of salsa takes me back to those moments of joy with my relatives when, through the music and dance, our hearts sang as one.

As I have grown, so have my tastes in music. It has opened me up to several styles of music, whether it's pop, rock, jazz, or classical. Music has become one of the diverse elements in my life. But no matter how far I travel, I always manage to find myself gravitating back to the sounds that bring me back home. Somehow, like Wes Moore, music has been a way both to connect to the past and as a self-expression method. Wherever life may take me, music allows me to revisit certain memories, moments, and people.

The way the other Wes Moore relates to music exemplifies how sound and rhythm can be a strong influence in forming an individual's personality. To him, music reflected his struggles and thus served as a coping mechanism for surviving the brutal facts of his life. It helped him express the emotional depth of his world, where words were never enough. This touches me, but my experience is far from one of survival; it's more about celebration and connection. Music remains crucial to expression, though, and an integral part of my understanding of my life and those who place a meaningful presence within it.

One of the strongest parts of music in my life is the way it can bring back memories. In my opinion, each song somehow has a moment or person attached with it. Like when I hear this one salsa song, it instantly transports me back to family reunions in which we just danced and celebrated together. On the other hand, the slower beats of certain ballads can remind me of quiet moments with friends or a significant other. Music, for me, acts as a time machine, bringing me back to specific feelings and experiences, making it a powerful tool for reflection.

In conclusion, music plays a vital role in both the other Wes Moore’s life and mine. That was the struggle he put into words, and mine is keeping the culture, family, and memories close. Music shapes our identities and can remind us of where we come from. It may even guide us through times when life has gone tangled. In the same way, Wes used music to comprehend his environment, I use it to look at my past and move forward, but never without a playlist in my head that connects me to those moments and the people I will never forget.

  1. Hello Juliana, I agree how music expresses emotions while also correlating with life going on around people. How some songs can relate to your struggles or even joy, it allows people to express their emotions without having to word their pain like you said. I agree that music is a form of survival to identify yourself and find your own voice. Great work :)

  4. What a wonderful connection to family, friends, and joyful gatherings and celebrations! I especially appreciate your comparison to music as a time machine to transport you back in time to certain people and happy, specific memories. You make a good connection to the Wes Moore story with your own relationship with music, but point out that the content and circumstances of the connection is quite different (challenges and violence v. celebration and love of family).
